FREEBIES

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all had an enjoyable day. My day was full of this, that and the other. I did plenty of jobs that needed doing. The washing won’t do itself don’t you know.

The best things in life are free. Finding the perfect piece of scrap fabric for a certain part of a project ….. oh yah! When a perfect stranger smiles at you while you’re out dog walking … yeehaw!!! When you find inspiration just when you need it most ….. yes please. When your friends and family are on call whenever you need emotional support ….. invaluable.

Speaking of free things ….. while I was prepping my sewing room in readiness for painting last autumn, I came across a whole lot of stuff that I didn’t even realise I had. I gathered up a serious pile of fabric that was tucked away here there and everywhere! So, this afternoon’s task was to go thru this bag of fabric and work out how to store it and/or use it.

I sat on a little stool and emptied one little pile after another out of this big bag. I loosely divided it up by colourway, sort of. A lot of this fabric was purchased many years ago with no plan of action. To be honest, it took me longer to fold the bag than it did to empty it!

So, now I have to work out what I’m going to do with all of this. One things for sure, I’ll be getting my books out for inspiration. In the meantime, I’ll store the fabric in bins as neatly as I can, until I have a proper plan of action.

This free fabric would be great for prototypes of some of the new designs/projects coming from my drawing board. Once made up, I can practice my freemotion quilting on it. It’s quite amazing, that little pile of fabric has inspired me to design and make new projects. I quite fancy making a couple of scrappy quilts with a twist; perhaps some string piecing would suit the fabrics. The sky is the limit.

It’s been a pretty good day in my little world. I got plenty done giving me a sense of accomplishment. Since becoming a single parent, this finding my feet malarkey has been quite difficult but I think I’m finally turning the corner. I’m actually enjoying making choices and decisions on my own. My new designs have changed, even the colours I use in said design samples are quite different nowadays.

So, that’s my report for today. I hope you all have a super duper cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy. Until next time,

Let’s all keep stitching

  1. So nice to hear from you and the pieces are so intriguing. Your Ditsy patterns would go well with them, to brighten them up. I would like to say how much I like the piece in front of the fireplace, and your home is so nice, pretty.
Have you ever made a “rag quilt”? The edges are all roughed up. Is it difficult? Also, I have a lot of doilies and want to make a quilt using them, at least a coverlet. Also, a lot of very old hankies, they would be pretty and interesting, no? There is also a version of squares sewed, then attached with crochet work, very light, airy and very pretty.
Any ideas? I am going forward in life like you…this is a one step at a time. And yes, the best things are the free ones, the kindness of others. Hugs for Maisie girl.xx

    1. Hi Joanna, I also like the hearth runner I made last week. I plan on making a couple more which will represent the seasons. Regarding rag quilts, I have made one but that was many years ago. It’s quite a simple technique. I have no idea where that quilt ended up! Now your doilies can also be used in quilt making. I have seen doilies cut up in quarters and appliqued in the corner of blocks. The doilies give the quilt a vintage feel which is trending at the moment. And the hankies, well I will post about hanky quilts soon. I dragged out one of my quilts for photos.
Take your time moving forward. The soul has to heal before you make any important decisions. The best advice I can offer is to be kind to yourself. One foot in front of the other with get you to where you want/need to go. Thanks for popping in today x

It’s the simple things that can make a day, the smile whilst out walking whether you’re smiler or the smilee could be the difference that saves a life.

    1. Hi Sue, just think about what you accomplished today. Admin might be blah but once it’s done you can move onto something more interesting. You’re so right about giving or receiving a smile. You can definitely make someone’s day with something as simple as a smile. Freebies are great. Thanks for popping in x

  3. Wow, finding a bag of forgotten fabric must have been fun, though sometimes I feel guilty about all mine. I’ve been on a mission for the last 12 months to only make from my stash & so far I’ve been doing pretty well & tidying along the way as well. Look forward to seeing your new designs & makes. I’ve really got to make 2 baby quilts at the moment, before I start again on some of my own designs, though the two are what a conjured up. Take care.
