DAY 30 MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve enjoyed your day. It’s Thursday, just in case you didn’t know. The sun’s been shining on and off all day. I have been busy much the same stuff, only it’s a different day. It’s amazing how the new normal has settled into my bones. I don’t even think about running simple errands anymore. It’s automatic to make a shopping list, look at it and decide that most of the items on said list are not needed imminently. The only thing on my running list is printer ink cartridges at the moment.

Well as you know it’s day 30 of my self-imposed messing around with art supplies challenge. I set out to do 30 days of art journal pages and somehow, I managed to follow through and produce 30 art journal pages. Here’s my effort for today ….

Sun Rainbow

Somewhere over the rainbow. It’s very appropriate for Thursday as the rainbow seems to be the symbol for the #NHS and also the sign of hope we all need in these trying times. Everywhere we go we see handmade with love rainbows hanging in windows. Even Sarah crocheted rainbows which I hung in my front window. Thursday evening at 8pm is the time we all stand out on our doorstep and clap for the #NHS and all the frontline and keyworkers who are keeping us going in these very strange times.

My Sarah has been experimenting with masking fabric masks. Apparently, we will all be wearing these masks if we need to get out and about after the lockdown eases and while we’re still observing social distancing. I like the simple pleated ones but Sarah likes the shaped ones. There is some dilemma over how we can insert the wire which holds the mask close to the face around the nose. We’ll have that worked out in no time I’m sure.

It seems to be an exceptionally quiet day in my little corner of the northeast of England. The pedestrians walking past my house has reduced considerably. The buses still go by but they are virtually empty. I suppose the still have to run for keyworkers. I see plenty of lorries delivering to our local supermarkets. Thank you, truckers, for helping keep the shelves stocked.

Well, my friends, I guess that’s my report for today. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy doing. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

DAY 29 MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all having a fabulous day. It’s been another very interesting day. I seem to be getting my spark back as I accept the new normal. Everyday is getting better and better. The more I immerse myself in the new normal the better I feel. For anyone who has accepted the new normal, give it a go and see what happens.

It’s Wednesday, the hump of the week. Most days I don’t know what day it is or what I’m suppose to be doing. I found that just going with the flow has helped me to build some kind of routine in these strange times. The To-Do Lists have gone out the window and I do what needs doing on any given day. It’s quite liberating really.

So, it’s day 29 of my self-imposed messing around with art supplies challenge. I am amazed that I’m still going with it! This is my effort for today …..

#NHS

Once again, I have kept it quite simple. It’s a simple case of layering, that’s all. Looking at my two-page spread now, it looks like a work palette that needs to be discarded. It was quite fun to work on as I just let go and created it step by step.

I am slowly but surely making progress on my hexagon quilt. I have almost finished joining up the panel which will square off one side of the quilt top. That will leave one more side to deal with and I can add a plain border to square it up ready for quilting. I feel a nice sense of accomplishment already and it isn’t even finished yet.

Hexie progress

Well, my friends, I guess that’s my report for today. It’s been a good one. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something that gives you a sense of accomplishment. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

DAY 28 MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE

Hello my lovelies. I hope your day has been as interesting as mine. Life just keeps getting better and better with each passing day of lockdown. The new normal is becoming normal.

Apart from walking with Maisie this morning, Sarah and I have been nowhere again today. However, we have a garden we can hang out in. And we both have our own workspaces where we can mess around with fabric and art supplies etc. And on a sunny day like today, we are more motivated to play with our supplies. Speaking of playing, here’s my art journal effort for today …..

Home

Once again, I kept my design simple. I think I like simple best. The washing line is reminiscent of Monday Washdays. I added a little vintage look washi tape top and bottom of the pages. And the sun cheers everyone up.

I have decided to carry on with my self-imposed messing around with art supplies challenge beyond the initial month that I originally set out. So, I have prepped another 7 days’ worth of pages. My list of ideas hasn’t run out yet. So, I’ll work my way through until the ideas dry up.

It’s been a pretty good day in my little world today. I’ve heard on the news that some businesses are re-opening while respecting social distancing rules. This will keep the economy ticking over. Slowly but surely the new normal is starting to work. I am a true believer that life will never be as it was. Perhaps all this is a wake-up call to a better life.

Well, my lovely friends, I guess that’s my report for today. Thank you for reading my random rambling thoughts. I hope you have a super cosy evening doing something that makes you happy. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

DAY 27 MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re having a good start to this current work week. We are starting our sixth week in lockdown. The sun is shining brightly reminding us that there are good things to come. Things will get better but life will never be the same as we remember it. For some that might be a good thing.

It’s day 27 of my self-imposed messing around with art supplies. Yes I said Day 27 …. I can’t believe it either because that means there are only a few days left of April !!!!! Time sure does fly. Are you ready for today’s messing around effort? Well, without further ado here it is …..

Keys

Today’s art journal page spread is very simple. I ripped a page out of a dictionary, trimmed it down and pasted it down. I added some simple stencilling, I did a bit of stamping and cut the subjects out and pasted them in place. I shaded everything using my water colour pencils. Bish bash bosh, that’s my art journal page for today. You see how easy it is. Anybody can do it. And you can use any format you wish.

I promised you a photo showing any progress I made on my hexagon quilt last week. I have been working on this project for a couple of years. I dragged it out again last week because I felt I needed to do some sewing, even if it was just something simple. At the moment I am busy filling in the shaped edges to even them out a little more before adding a plain border.

Hexagons 1

It’s starting to look like this now …..

Hexagons 2

I have no idea what I will use for the plain border. I will dig around my stash to see if I have anything big enough that tones in well with the hexagons. Once that’s done, I’ll have to decide on a backing and how to quilt it. All this will take a while but it will get done by Christmas.

So, it’s another lovely day in my little corner of the northeast of England. We haven’t had much rain this past month, this unusual for April. I watched our Prime Minister make a speech on TV this morning. Yes, Boris Johnson is back at the helm after contracting and recovering from the invisible enemy. He seems to be in no rush to ease lockdown and with good reason too.

Well, my friends, I guess that’s my report for today. I hope you have a super cosy evening doing something worthwhile. Until next time,

Let’s keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

DAY 26 MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all having an enjoyable weekend. I also hope that you’ve all settled into the new normal. Sarah and I are staying home in order to be well. I understand that it’s not easy for any of us. Our freedom to roam has been taken away from us for a very good reason. That invisible enemy is a killer.

Apart from household, not many though, I have been doing a little hexie work (I will post progress soon) but mostly I have been working on my art journal. That includes searching the internet for new ideas and techniques that I can use to change it up a wee bit. I seem to keep going back to the same thing over and over again. So, here’s my effort for yesterday …..

Bluebird

I made a list of ideas I wanted to include, one of which was bunting and a bird. I have since added several other things to my list which will take me into next month. So, I may be forced to carry on with this challenge until my art journal pages run out. And now for today’s effort …..

Bright circles

This one was really fun to work on. I used a funky bag which I cut into strips and used in the background. The flower petals were made by using some of the Brusho pieces I created at the beginning of the challenge. And of course, I used my trusted water colour pencils to add shading and detail. I would say that I have used my water colour pencils in every single journal page I have produced. Along with my water colour pencils my other favourite tools are my few stencils. If I were to invest a little money into new tools, it would be purchasing a couple of new stencils. Perhaps once the shops open again, I will consider it.

My washing machine is whirring away and the scones I baked a little while ago are cooling on the racking. Sarah and I will have a little tea party in a while. We may even sit outside to party! The weather has been favourable for quite a few days. I can’t remember the last time we had rain. I wonder what kind of weather May will bring? there’s only a few days left in April !!!

So, my lovely friends, I guess that’s my report for this weekend. I hope you have a super cosy day doing something you truly enjoy doing. Be strong, stay home and be well. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

DAY 24 MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all had a really good week. This week has been quite interesting in that the new normal seems to be blending into the old normal.

As I sit here writing this post, the sun is shining. The road is much quieter than it was six weeks ago. There are no children frolicking about in the sunshine. And anyone that walks past my house is definitely on a mission. There’s no dawdling about nowadays.

I had an exciting morning. I had my shower, blow dried my hair, put some fresh clothes on in readiness for picking up my Click & Collect grocery order from the supermarket. We seem to step out only once a week now. The most exciting part is unpacking our groceries and work out what substitutions we ended up with. This week there was only one item substituted which were Maris Piper potatoes for King Edward. I can live with that. So now we’re set until next Friday when we head out again to pick up our next contact free grocery order.

It’s day 24 of my self-imposed messing around with art supplies challenge. Today’s effort contains cut out butterflies. They are quite pretty and I reckon I would like to use them again in a larger format art journal as quite a lot of the butterflies of the paper are rather large and would make another nice art journal page someday. Here’s what I made this time …..

Butterflies

It was a fun page to work on. I’m trying to work up my courage to do this kind of thing on fabric. Just simple calico stabilised with iron-on interfacing would probably do the trick. And I might even be able to add some machine or hand stitching to make it special. I don’t know why I am so hesitant to have a go on fabric. I don’t have to show the results if it turns out to be a horrible effort. I’ll have to make a plan of action and perhaps force myself to have a go. After all I am a captive audience these days. And I have all the supplies required and more.

Well, I guess that’s another work week over. The weekends are no different than the work week nowadays. So many of us stay home in order to stay safe. Sarah and I rarely speak to another soul in person. Keeping our distance is what is keeping the numbers of new cases afflicted by the invisible enemy. Staying home is the new normal no matter how sociable you are.

So, my friends, I guess that my report for today. I shall be taking a break tomorrow but reappearing on Sunday or Monday to show you a couple more art journal pages. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy doing. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

DAY 23 MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all happy and being creative. Creating is the one thing that is helping me cope with being in lockdown.

So, it’s already day 23 of my self-imposed messing around with art supplies challenge. I can’t believe how quickly April is whizzing by. I started working with a To-Do List but just couldn’t stick to the tasks on the list. So, I have graduated to doing whatever needs doing as and when needed. Today I planned on watering my outside plants if required, doing a bit of laundry, some cooking and of course some art journaling. One or two things might creep into the mix also.

So, for my art journaling effort today …..

Beach Hut

This is wallpaper beach hut. Simple. I used loads of pen dots to highlight the stencilled swirls. The dots are easy to produce and bring some interest to the piece. I’m not an art critic. I know nothing about art. My style seems to be turning a bit grungy nowadays. I seem to have stepped away from the accurate straight lines and perfect circles. I just mess around with anything I have at hand. And I post my efforts here just to show you that if I can do this anyone can.

It’s day 23. That means that I only have one week to go to be able to say that I met my challenge. I cannot believe that I’ve gone this far. In the beginning I wasn’t enjoying it but once I relaxed it became fun. I think I will carry on art journaling after the challenge is over but not as a challenge. I’m going to choose my next Pink Pig sketchbook which will be a larger format and I will start gathering ideas and papers to use etc. The next art journal might record something that happened on any given day.

Most of you who live in the UK will know that a new series of The Great British Sewing Bee started last evening. I stayed awake through most of the episode. While watching last night’s episode Sarah sent me this photo taken this time last year …..

Patrick Grant

You never know you’ll meet in Hobbycraft!!! I have no idea if there is a Patrick Grant promotional cardboard cut out this year. Either way he’s still much taller than me.

So, my friends, I guess that’s my report for today. I hope you’re all staying away from the madding crowd therefore staying safe. I’ll meet you all outside on our doorsteps this evening at 8pm clapping in appreciation for the NHS and various many other people who are keeping us all going safely. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

DAY 22 MESSING AROUND

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all safe and well today. Here in my little corner of the northeast of England, the sun has been shining brightly for a few days. It’s also starting to warm up a bit. I’ll take this weather compare to dreary wet days any time!

Yesterday, I mention that I hadn’t been doing so good on the sewing front. Well last night I joined quite a few hexagons together. I’m at a point where I am filling in the edges of my hexagon quilt. I hope to take photos and show you the progress sometime in the net few days. It was a treat working on some simple quilt making stuff last night. I’m not giving up on my self-imposed challenge though. Today’s effort is another using cut out paper which I found stored in my loft a few days ago. The paper has a Japanese flavour to it. Here is today’s art journal page …..

Japanese

Using the paper which was stored in the loft reminded me that I have another little bin in my room with scraps of wallpaper that I might be able to cut out and use as subjects for art journaling. I see things much differently now. The recycling holds a great wealth of stuff that I can use as tools for stamping, masking and as surface protection. Whoop whoop.

You may remember that I planted a few pansies a couple of days ago. Well I was outside watering the pansies this morning. They seem to be growing great guns. The sun is doing them good.

There’s not a lot to report nowadays. I’m not going anywhere, not meeting up with anyone and to be honest everyday still feels like Groundhog Day the movie. After five weeks of lockdown, I am starting to feel a bit more motivated. I feel safe in my home, I’m eating and sleeping well now. I’m finding inspiration in paces I never thought I would.

So, my friends, I guess that’s my report for today. I hope you’re all finding your way through the fog that the invisible enemy has created. For this evening, I hope you have a super cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy doing. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

DAY 21 MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all enjoying a beautiful fresh spring day. The sun is shining here. The birds are singing and the grass is getting greener. The traffic, well there’s much less of that for the moment.

It’s day 21 of my self-imposed messing around with art supplies challenge. Here’s my effort for today …..

Trees

These funky trees are cut out of wrapping paper that I found stored up in my loft yesterday. I have discovered that simple little pen dots lift a picture nicely. Sometimes it’s the simplest thing that tickle your fancy.

Along with today’s art journal page, I prepped a couple more pages for future efforts …..

Prepped 1

Prepped 2

I got up quite early this morning and worked on my art journal. It’s becoming an automatic thing now. I must get my sewing out and do some. I haven’t missed not sewing. It’s almost like I’m suffering from sewing block. You’ve all heard of writer’s block, well I’m suffering from sewing block! I feel as time go by, I am becoming more focused on whatever the project du jour is. For the time being its art journaling. However, I am going to force myself to do a little hexie work just to re-introduce myself back to sewing. Quilt making has been my passion for many years but I must admit that the change of pace has done me good.

So, my friends, that’s my short report for today. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something interesting. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

DAY 20 MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all had a fabulous day. And I hope that if you set yourself any challenges that you’re winning!!!

I know I’ve said it again and again but hasn’t life changed in a few short weeks. Quite a few of us have been in lockdown for a month or better. Lockdown, staying home, is the only thing I am able to contribute to the war against the invisible enemy. I learned last evening that I have a couple friends who are working in hospitals and have been exposed to this invisible enemy. I wish my friends and anyone who is infected a very speedy recovery. And for everyone else, please respect social distancing recommendations.

So, it’s day 20 of my self-imposed messing around with art supplies challenge. Here’s today’s effort …..

Day 20

In my quest to meet my challenge without purchasing any supplies, I headed up to the loft this morning in search of a small chest of papers I knew or thought I might still have stored up there. I found the chest and these are the few papers I selected this time.

Paper Selection

They’re mainly sheets of wrapping paper that I bought from Paperchase for crafting purposes years ago. The patterns may be a little large for my small art journal but I have plenty of larger ones which I could start once this one is finished. Or even start now just because I want to. Sarah keeps bringing me things from a stash we stored in her workspace over the last few years. Between us we have plenty to keep us going for a while. The recycling holds a few treasures as well. Anyone can try this art journaling craft. It’s a great way to express yourself especially when the new normal is forcing itself on us.

And speaking of the new normal, Sarah came down the stairs to see me rocking in my chair while composing this post. What she didn’t realise is that I was watching The Nest which I had recorded last week and there was a scene with funky dance music to which I was “dancing” to not rocking. No, I was not having a breakdown in my chair! We keep busy in whatever way we can.

Maisie somehow injured herself this morning. We found her limping around the hallway. So instead of taking her for a walk this morning we let her rest her leg. She seems better now but we’ll keep her quiet for today and see how things unfurl tomorrow.

So, my friends, I guess that’s my report for today. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you enjoy. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.
